Porsche Carrera Cup Australia

Surfers Paradise Street Circuit

In addition to Queensland Raceway, Surfers is our ‘other’ home round and one of the highest profile events of the season. The weather is normally great, everyone is in a good mood and the racing is always exciting. Sometimes, a little too exciting, but we always have sweet memories from Surfers as the circuit where we wrapped up our 2016, 2018 and 2022 Carrera Cup driver’s championships with Matt, Jaxon and Harri.

We started the weekend with an awesome activation with Cup Car McQueen, dangling him over the beach from a crane on one of the Frank Development high-rise building sites in Surfers.

Clay continued to show his improved qualifying form by taking 7th for the race 1 grid. Unfortunately race 1 was cancelled after the turn 1 pile up and he had to start race 2 from grid 12. He had a ripper race with a strong first lap and gained 6 positions on this tricky street track. He lost a position at the start of race 3 then held position until the chequered flag.

Lockie was quite conservative in practice after finding the wall in P1 last year. He started race 1 from 11th on the grid then clipped the turn 1 chicane wall at the beginning of lap 2. The AMRC did an ‘all-nighter’ to have him ready to start race 2 from grid 6. He was in quite a bit of discomfort after the shunt so kept out of trouble in races 2 and 3 to gain as much valuable track knowledge as possible.

Prior to Surfers, Caleb’s best qualifying effort was 7th at QR back in August. He did a terrific job to qualify 6th for race 1 and 5th for race 2, and we were confident he was in for a breakthrough weekend after a rough couple of rounds. However, in the first lap of race 1 he was hit from behind and pushed wide which dropped him 5 or 6 positions which put his track position right in the middle of the turn 1 pile-up. Unfortunately, the damage was so severe the bodyshell was a write off and his weekend was over after less than 2 race laps. Brutal.

As this was Brett’s first time at the famous and daunting beach-front circuit he took the time in practice to learn the track, then qualified a solid 5th. He was tangled up in the race 1 melee which did significant damage, but nothing the AMRC couldn’t rectify over night. Some camera angles looked like he didn’t see the incident until too late, but we can confirm the category officials looked at his in-car footage and substantiated he did the best job he could given the lack of vision from the cars ahead.

Summary

Well what a crazy weekend! Needless to say, the AMRC (awesome MR crew) pulled off one of Australian motorsport’s 2025 mechanical miracles by bringing Lockie's car and Cup Car McQueen back to life with a new front tub, rear chassis rails, numerous suspension and bodywork repairs overnight.

We even had Russell from Weavers Autobody Restorations and Cobe from CMP Wraps come out in the middle of the night to help ensure the two cars were immaculate and ready to race the next morning. It was very humbling to have almost every other Porsche team in the paddock acknowledge the very late night and massive effort, by our crew.

Now the awesome MR crew have three weeks until we race at Sandown for the final Michelin Sprint Challenge round for 2025, supporting the Supercars.
